Imagine if there was a way to generate great business leaders in your organisation. There was some sort of formula or recipe that you could use to bring out the best in people, even those who already work for you. Well, it turns out that there might be. Research over the years has found that people often ascend to leadership positions when they have the right combination of abilities and training
Encourage Continuous Learning
One of the best ways to develop strong leaders is to encourage them to learn continuously throughout their careers. Don’t allow them to become outdated or use tools and techniques that are only valid 10, 15, or 20 years ago.
One way you can deal with this issue for leaders specifically is to enrol key individuals on leadership and management programmes. These can act like a rocket under their performance and enable people to do far more during the day than they ever thought was possible.
Focus On Systematic Execution
Often in business, what matters more than performance is consistency. In many companies, ideas are cheap, but execution is lacking. True leaders are people who build repeatable systems and adopt clear accountability. They’re not afraid to focus most of their time on the organisational steps instead of the high-profile creative or public steps. Instead of allowing frontline talents to clear roadblocks, they deal with these directly, allowing the people in the organisation to perform their assigned tasks at the right cadence.
Part of their job is ultimately helping people avoid getting bogged down in red tape. Too many companies have too many internal rules and deny their people the autonomy they require to be at their best.
Be Radically Empathetic
You’ll also notice that many of the best leaders are radically empathetic people. Instead of bossing people around, they really understand what their subordinates are going through, and this creates a culture of trust and respect. Empathy is something that builds deep psychological safety. When workers feel like they are safe because they’re around an empathetic boss, it actually gives them more confidence to utilise their talents.
Of course, being radically empathetic needs to be balanced with clear, timely, and direct feedback. Employees must still understand what their position is, but ultimately they should be aware of their current situation and what they can do to improve.
Be A Visionary
Finally, great business leaders require some elements of vision. They shouldn’t be pure visionaries who only focus on ideas, but they should be able to paint a picture that’s vivid enough for the rest of the team to understand and work toward it.
What’s nice about a vision is that it acts as a North Star in many organisations. Once employees and staff understand what the company as a whole is aiming for, they’re able to adjust their daily activities to accommodate it. Companies that lack this sort of grand vision or narrative tend to fall by the wayside. People are just performing roles and tasks rather than really thinking about what the overall mission and objective of the company is. Leaders who can articulate this are often very successful.
